A method for monitoring a heating resistor (2) for the seat of a motor vehicle, connected in series with the break contact (4) of a thermostat (5); a diode (6) is connected across the terminals of the contact (4), a monitoring current is passed through the resistor (2) and the diode (6) alternately in one direction or the other; in one direction, the method checks that the current is passing continuously through the resistor and in the other direction it checks whether the contact (4) is closed. <IMAGE>
