PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as a foaming agent, refrigerant, detergent, etc., in high efficiency by reacting an olefin with a halogenoalkane in the presence of a catalyst consisting of AlBr3, AlI3 or a halide containing either one of the elements of Ga, In, B, etc. CONSTITUTION:A halogenoalkane is produced by reacting an olefin of formula I (R<1> is H, Cl, F, Br, CF3 or CF2Cl; R<2> to R<4> are H, Cl, F or Br) (e.g. 1,1- dichlorodifluoroethylene) with a halogenoalkane of formula II (Y is Cl, F, etc.; R5 is Cl, F, etc., R<6> and R<7> are H, Cl, etc.) (e.g. dichlorodifluoromethane) in the presence of a catalyst consisting of AlBr3, AlI3 or a halide containing at least one element selected from Ga, In, B, Zr, Hf, Ti, Nb and Ta.
