Spring coiling machine - has alternative crank and cam mechanisms to give rotary or straight cut

The spring-coiling machine has a wire-intake mechanism (10) to a coiling station (12) with tools (34,36), also a pitch control mechanism (14) with tool (38) travelling in a straight line in the station. A moving cutter (40) works with a mandrel (144) inside the spring and forming a stationary one. The moving tool is driven round a closed cylindrical path by a crank mechanism (82,84) to give a rotary cut, or slides to and fro in a straight line. The crank mechanism has a screwed spindle (128) forming a thrust rod and coupled to a slide (88). The latter works in a guide (96) turning on an axis (106) parallel to that of the crankshaft, and which supports the moving cutter (40). A cam mechanism (170') gives straight movement of the cutter when desired, having a lever in the machine frame and which is coupled to the slide in place of the thrust rod, the guide (96) being adjustable for direction. ADVANTAGE - Easy changeover between different cutting methods.
