PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compounds excellent in oxidation stability and having a high viscosity index by reacting a mixed acid of a specified tertiary fatty acid/dibasic acid with 2,2-dimethyl-3-hydroxypropyl-2',2'-dimethyl-3'- hydroxypropionate. CONSTITUTION:A mixed acid composed of 70-100mol% tertiary fatty acid represented by formula I (R ms 1-6C alkyl; R<1> and R<2> ate 1-2C alkyl; Number of total carbon between R, R<1> and R<2> is <=8) and 0-30mol% 4-8C dibasic acid is reacted with 2,2-dimethyl-3-hydroxypropyl-2',2'-dimethyl-3'-hydroxypropionate expressed by formula II to obtain the objective tertiary fatty acid ester excellent in oxidation stability, having a high viscosity index and useful, therefor, as a base oil or an additive for a lubricating oil for a machine, having a requirement of these properties. The above-mentioned ester is suitable especially for a base of an engine oil for a high-performance engine or for a long-drain engine. |
