PURPOSE:To industrially and advantageously obtain the subject ester useful as an important synthetic raw material for antibiotic substances, etc., by reacting an acetoacetic acid ester with a microorganism of the genus Clostridium, etc., or a treated substance thereof. CONSTITUTION:An acetoacetic acid ester (at 0.01-50wt.% concentration) obtained by reacting an alcohol with diketene in the presence of a catalyst is reacted with a culture solution of a microorganism selected from the group consisting of the genera Clostridium, Methanobacterium, Methanosarcina and Acetogenium, a microbial cell suspension thereof, a treated substance such as crushed microbial cells thereof or a substance treated with acetone to afford the objective ester. |
