To seal the edges of an insulating glass pane during mounting, surplus adhesive is removed while it is still soft. A smoothing roller is passed along the edge joint, at the surplus adhesive, in a translatory movement where the roller is rotated against the direction of travel to pick up the surplus adhesive on its mantle surface through the effect of its rotary speed and, simultaneously, the applied adhesive is smoothed. The collected surplus adhesive is removed from the roller mantle by a scraper. The adhesive is pref. applied to the edge joint in front of the smoothing roller, synchronised with its translatory movement. The gap between the adhesive application and the roller is selected to ensure that the adhesive is still soft when the roller comes into contact with it. When a smaller glass pane is to be bonded to a larger pane, the smoothing roller is moved with a translatory motion along the edge of the smaller glass pane. After the adhesive has hardened, the joint is treated by brushing. ADVANTAGE - The technique gives a high-speed sealing and mounting action to the glass panes, without requiring further finishing.
