Two distance measurers (22,24) are placed on opposite sides of the tree trunk (16) to be cut into planks at a predetermined distance from each other. They are moved in their common measuring plane along the cutting line relative to the tree trunk. The measured distance values are continuously delivered to a computer (30). A length measurer (32) also supplies the computer with measurement values for the length of the path covered by the distance measurers continuously so that the computer can correlate both sets of values. The trunk can be moved while the distance measurers remain stationary. The latter can operate by laser-optics to conform to the laser triangulation principle. The beams (26,28) from the laser source are coaxial and assigned to a plane that coincides with the cutting plane of the saw.
