PURPOSE:To improve brightness and spatial color mixture effect by converting a display data signal by means of matrix electrodes shared by laminated EL elements, a driver functioning both as a driver on a data side and a driver on a scanning side and a frame memory. CONSTITUTION:EL light emitting layers 1-3 having the different colors of emitted light are successively laminated and matrix electrodes 5, 20, 21 and 10 which are mutually orthogonal and is shared between the upper and the lower EL light emitting layers are arranged between the EL light emitting layers. Then, a 1st control circuit 26 is provided, which generates a control signal for driving the matrix electrodes 5, 20, 21 and 10 as the electrodes on the data side or the scanning side. A converted display data signal in which the row and the column of the original display data signal are replaced is transferred to drivers 22-25 by a frame memory 27 in a 2nd control circuit 28 corresponding to the specification of the picture element on an EL display panel. Therefore, the light emission by the EL elements of at least two colors is performed in one field. Thus, the brightness and the spatial color mixture are improved.
