The obtained metal alloy catalysts are applied in hydrogenating vegetable oils for use in the food-processing industry. The catalysts are oxidation-proof and offer high activity and selectivity. The method involves grinding a nickel-aluminium or in some cases, copper, cobalt or zinc alloy and treating the resulting powder with a 1-50 percent aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide at 100-110 degrees C, while constantly stirring and making up with water. This is followed by a decantation of the resulting couple of layers, precipitation, washing the catalyst in the precipitate to a neutral reaction and suspending the same in hydrogenated oil with a melting point of 65 degrees C.
