A polishing pellet (I) for polishing functional surfaces of glass or crystal with a contact pressure of 6 N/cm2 consists of a polymer matrix (II) highly filled with polishing material (III). The novelty is that (II) is a viscous to soft hydrophobic adhesive or a very brittle hydrophilic adhesive for (III). - (II) is an oligobutadiene (pref. with mol. wt. 700-3200, mainly 1,2-units) which is thermally crosslinked before compression, an unstabilised modified polybutadiene (pref. with mol. wt. 1000-2000, with ratio 1,4-/1,2-units = (90:10) - (50:50)) which is crosslinked before compression, an alpha-methylstyrene oligomer (pref. an alpha-methyl-styrene oligomer-dicarboxylic acid with mol. wt. 500-800 and acid no. 120-180), an alpha-methylstyrene-maleic anhydride copolymer (pref. wtih mol. wt. 20,000-40,000) or a propylene-maleic anhydride copolymer (pref. with mol. wt. 20,000-30,000); (I) contains 0.5-20 wt.% (II).
