PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristics and traveling durability by adding a filter comprising surface-treated inorg. fine particles to the back coating layer. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic layer is formed on the one principal plane of a nonmagnetic base film, and the back coating layer is formed on the other principal plane. A filter comprising inorg. fine particles is added to the back coating layer to reduce and stabilize the coefft. of friction. This filler consists of spherical particles having 0.6 - 1.2 mum particle size, the surface of which is treated with at least one agent selected from silane coupling agent, titanate coupling agent, and fatty acid of >=12 carbon number, and is added to the back coating layer by a minute amt. not to degrade the surface roughness, ranging from 0.05 wt.% to 0.5 wt.% of the total of the back coating layer. Thereby, the back coating layer has small surface roughness, low frictional coefft. and stable characteristics, and the obtd. magnetic tape has excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristics and traveling durability. |
