The preparation and use of unique, environmentally benign, economical and selectively modified polynorbornene sponges are described as selective absorbents for hydrocarbons, their halogenated analogs and selected oxygenated derivatives thereof. The modified polynorbornene material contains organotitanium phosphates or oligophosphates and is environmentally stable for extended periods, easy to use, efficient and absorbate-retentive. Exhausted product will not drip or exude absorbate under conventional landfill disposal conditions and will produce only minimal ash when incinerated.
