The container handling system allows the containers to be transferred between a lorry and a ship's hold, or vice versa, with data communication between an external control point (10) and the transport container (110), via a transceiver (120) attached to the latter, coupled to a memory (150), holding the relevant transport data. A stationary laser device (32) transmits a laser beam to an optical retromodulator, with evaluation of the signal reflected back by the latter, for determining the transport data and the container position.
