In a television transmission system of the MAC/packet type data signals and digital audio signals are transmitted in packets. Each packet comprises a packet header of H (=31) bits and a data field of N-H (=720) bits. To protect the data bits in a data packet from transmission errors, the data stream which is supplied by the data source is divided into data blocks of k data bits. These data blocks are subjected to a Fire encoding. Fire codewords having a length of k+P bits are obtained by adding a number of P error correction bits. The values k and P are now chosen to be such that k+P is an integral submultiple (D) of N-H. The D Fire codewords thus obtained, which jointly fill the data field of a data packet, are bit-sequentially interleaved with a depth D. <IMAGE> |
