To apply an electrostatic discharge to material surfaces, and to remove dust from workpieces such as in mfg. paper, from rollers in mfg. glass, in mfg. plastics films or painted vehicle bodies two ion streams containing positive and negative ions are developed in an ionising zone. They are carried to the workpiece surface by an air stream between them at an angle to the workpiece surface. The air stream is aligned against the direction or workpiece travel through the housing. ADVANTAGE - The technique gives an effective cleaning action to workpiece surfaces.
