A numerical controller for machine tools or robots exchanges control and warning signals with the controlled device via an adaptor interface and signal lines. The interface has an associated programmable converter (U1) which determines the signal line to be associated with each signal function and type of access. This relationship can be completely freely adjusted during the installation phase but, during operation, the user can only change the relationship for signals which are not relevant to operating procedures. USE/ADVANTAGE - User has max. freedom to define number and position of signals from interface.
