Keratin fibres, esp. human hair, are dyed by concurrent or sequential application of- (a) a monohydroxyindole coupler of formula (I) below, (b) a para-type oxidation base, and (c) an oxidising agent. Dyeing compositions containing (a) and (b) may additionally comprise ortho-type oxidation bases, further couplers, and direct dyes. <IMAGE> or a salt thereof; in which- the OH group is in position 6 or 7, R1 is H or C1-4 alkyl; and R2 and R3 are each H, C1-4 alkyl, CO2H or C1-4 alkoxycarbonyl. The compounds 6-hydroxy-1-methylindole and 7-hydroxy-3-methylindole are said to be novel, and their synthesis is described. |
