Continuous welding process for overlapping longitudinal edges of cylindrical can bodies has the novelty of a 'Z'-shaped guide (15) which is positioned in the region before the electrode rollers and has two opposed grooves (16,17) converging in the direction of the welding position. In order to ensure optimum positioning of the body edges, a series of successive rollers provide tangential contact points for the body. Each series comprises one roller pair (19a) positioned one either side of the guide (15) and a third roller positioned between the other two diametrically opposite the guide. ADVANTAGE - The guidance system ensures that the can body has a pure cylindrical shape.
