The level indicator described comprises an acoustic or ultrasonic transducer, which is located in a first housing and forms an independent functional unit, plus the electrical circuit which is located in another separate, housing and forms a second functional unit. The functional units are constructed in such a way that the complete level indicator can be assembled from the various components by placing a steel plate above the acoustic or ultrasonic transducer, or by insulating with a commercially available sealing compound, or by the use of two separate but similar housings for the acoustic or ultrasonic transducer, or by the use of optionally separate but dimensionally identical acoustic or ultrasonic transducers optionally mounted on a container by means of a lapped flange or on the inside of a container by means of a suspension link, or by using a conduit, depending on the application.
