Cast asphalt, used as the top layer for traffic surfaces, contains high strength, temp. resistant plastics fibres (usually of polyacrylonitrile) as reinforcement. Prodn. of the cast asphalt, involves mixing the plastics reinforcing fibres with heated mineral aggregate before mixing with the hot binder. USE/ADVANTAGE - The cast asphalt is esp. used as the top layer of airport surfaces, motorways and other main roads. The reinforcing fibres spread loads so that the asphalt can withstand heavy point loads without deformation, while not affecting the working properties of the asphalt.
