1,130,669. Universal joints. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 8 June, 1967 [29 June, 1966], No. 26498/67. Heading F2U. An axially slidable constant velocity ratio universal joint for a motor-vehicle swing axle comprises a series of balls 16 in a free cage 18 with alternate balls 16 being mounted at the intersection of oppositely inclined pairs of grooves 20, 32 in the outer and inner cylindrical races 12, 14 of the driven and driving members 10, 68, and the intervening balls 16 being accommodated in opposed axially extending pairs of grooves 26, 38 in the said races 12, 14, which are thus permitted relative axial movement, the inclined intersecting sets of grooves 20, 32 being arranged to produce a relative axial force R on the members (Fig. 3) due to torque transfer in the joint tending to telescopically reduce or extend the length of the axle shaft to balance suspension forces in response to torque changes and thus prevent vehicle " squat " during operation. Stop faces 50, 60 limit the relative axial movement of the members 12, 14 of the joint which is sealed by a flexible boot 64.
