The rail system, which runs around the factory floor, is supported at frequent intervals by stands (1). The carriages (9) each have a transverse conveyor belt (24) which is driven over end rollers (22,23) by an electric motor (25) via a belt drive (26). A controller (34) within each carriage controls the current fed from a source (33) to the motor and also controls the movement of the carriage along the track.
