The method is for thermally treating solid materials which are provided on the inner wall of hollow body rotating at high speed around its shaft which is open on one side. The body is heated or cooled on the outside and the material which is finely sepd. removed and collected when it comes out of the rotating body. The shape of the body is roughly that of a cone with an open bottom and the finely sepd. material is disposed in the top of the hollow body. The outside of the body is heated by radiated and hot combustion gases which are guided over the outside of the body from top to bottom. The gas formed flows through a cooling body in the hollow body and the gas is quenched and removed from the hollow body.
