PURPOSE:To obtain the liquid crystal electrooptical element having a high display contrast by using a high-polymer film stretched in two directions orthogonal with each other as an optically anisotropic body. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal cells 3 formed by inserting a homeotropically oriented liquid crystal 6 between two sheets of electrode plates 5 and the optically anisotropic body 2 are inserted between polarizing plates 1, 4 to constitute the element. The following optically anisotropic body 2 is used in this constitution: The biaxially stretched film which is negated in retardation by stretching the high-polymer film essentially consisting of polycarbonate until the retardation decreases to 0.3mum, then stretching the film again in the direction orthogonal therewith is used. As a result, the decrease of the display contrast by the residual retardation of the film is prevented. |
