PURPOSE:To produce SiC powder easily at a low cost, by putting a mixture of silica powder and carbon felt or carbon fiber in a graphite crucible, and heating and reacting in vacuum or in an inert gas atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:The graphite crucible 2 is filled with a mixture 3 of silica powder and loosened carbon felt or carbon fiber having a length of about 1-5mm., and the crucible is placed in a vacuum chamber 1. The vacuum chamber 1 is evacuated, and if necessary filled with an inert gas. The content is heated at about 1,500-1,900 deg.C for about 5-60min to effect the reaction of the silica powder and the carbon felt or carbon fiber to obain beta-SiC fiber or felt. Powder of beta-SiC can be produced easily by pulverizing the fiber or felt. |
