The proposed method is applicable to pulverised coal and/or oil fired furnaces. Rough ground limestone (CaCO3) is calcined to produced powdered quicklime (CaO) which is injected into the combustion space (9) of the furnace (1) where it reacts with the SO2 and O2 in the flue gas. The solid anhydride (CaSO4) formed and the surplus quicklime is then separated. Quicklime is preferably produced in a fluidised bed calciner (6) and supplied directly into the furnace.
