The invention relates to a tampon applicator with a cylindrical outer casing and an inner casing (52) which is displaceable therein, is provided with an axial slit (55) and encloses a tampon (53). A tongue-like retainer element (60) is flexibly connected in one piece to the outer casing (51) and projects through the axial slit (55) of the inner casing (52) into the latter and is in contact with the rear end of the tampon (60). When the inner casing (52) is withdrawn from the outer casing (51), the tampon (53) is held fast by the retainer element (60) and transferred into the outer casing (51). The retainer element (60) is provided with one part of a locking device (catch plate 65), whose other part is formed by one of the two casings (51, 52) (axial edges 55a, 55b of the axial slit 55 of the inner casing 52). Said locking parts cooperate so that the retainer element (60) is locked in its engagement position curved into the inner casing (52). This ensures that the tampon (53) is transferred from the inner casing (52) into the outer casing (51) on use of the tampon applicator, and simultaneously ensures simple, economic mass production of the tampon applicator.
