PURPOSE:To obtain the title hydrocarbon by using a solid base obtained by reacting an alumina with carbonate, etc., of alkali metal and of alkali metal hydride while heating as a catalyst when an aromatic hydrocarbon having H at alpha-position of side chain is alkylated with an olefin. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic hydrocarbon (e.g. isopropylbenzene) having H at alpha-position of side chain is alkylated with an olefin (e.g. ethylene) to provide the title substance (e.g. tert.-amylbenzene), the reaction is carried out using a specific solid base as a catalyst at 20-200 deg.C in 2-100kg/cm<2>. The above- mentioned solid base is obtained by reacting an alumina with carbonate of alkali metal and/or aluminate and alkali metal hydride in an inert gas atmosphere at 200-800 deg.C for 0.5-10hr. The aimed material can be efficiently obtained also in reduced catalytic amount and mild conditions by the above-mentioned method. |
