The invention consists in periodically creating on the wire, at a first point along its length, using an exciter 4, a vibrational pulse, in measuring the propagation times t1, t2 of this pulse along the wire between the first point and a second and a third point, using two detectors 5, 6 placed respectively upstream 5 and downstream 6 of the exciter 4, and in determining at least one parameter relating to the wire on the basis of t1 and t2. This parameter will for example be the speed V of the wire (thread) and/or the tension T of the wire (thread). In the case when the detectors 5, 6 are at the same distance D from the exciter 4: <IMAGE> with m the mass of the wire (thread) per unit length.
