An electrographic image forming apparatus comprises means for forming a latent image on a carrier in either inverted or non-inverted form; typically, the apparatus can be a printer using a laser to image drum 105, or a copier where the laser is digitally controlled in response to scanning of an original G. After developing at station 106, the toned images can be transferred directly to one side of a sheet S passing between the drum 105 and an intermediate carrier such as belt 107 or can be temporarily transferred to belt 107 for use on the other side of the sheet S. The apparatus can be used in a two-pass mode with the sheet being re-circulated through guides SG' and SG'', and/or with developed images being supplied simultaneously to both sides of the sheets. Multi-colour effects can also be obtained, especially with the arrangement of Fig. 26, involving a belt (1) as the image carrier, and four developing stations (7, 9, 11, 13). When images are formed simultaneously on both sides of a sheet S, the sheet need only be passed through fixing section 117 once. <IMAGE>
