PURPOSE: To prepare a hair dye composition, having an indole derivative and a substituted 2-nitro-p-phenylenediamine, capable of developing a color with an oxidizing agent selected from iodide ions and hydrogen peroxide, a nitrite, etc., and capable of providing a varied color having a reflection color. CONSTITUTION: A color is developed with an oxidizing agent selected from (a) iodide ions and hydrogen peroxide, (b) a nitrite, (c) periodic acid, sodium hypochlorite, etc., and (d) a permanganate, etc., when applying (A) a composition comprising an indole derivative and a substituted 2-nitro-p-phenylenediamine such as N-(β-hydroxyethyl)-1-amino-2-nitro-N,N'-(bis-β-hydroxyethyl)-amino-4- benzene to hair. In the case of (a), dyeing is carried out with a composition B containing H2 O2 when the component A contains the iodide ions and further with the composition B containing the iodide ions when the composition A contains H2 O2 . A device or a kit having plural section parts containing the compositions A and B are placed in separate section parts is used.
