A process for steering a transport device 1 which has a chassis 2 and wheels 3a-3h fastened in the chassis 2 on both sides of its centre line and situated one behind the other in its longitudinal direction, wherein, in order to change the running direction of the transport device, all wheels 3a-3h are turned about vertical turning axes 4a-4h at an angle relative to the longitudinal direction of the chassis 2 such that the rotation axes 11a-11h of all wheels 3a-3h mutually intersect in essentially the same turning axis 9, wherein the transport device 1, as it moves, turns around the turning axis 9 and wherein, when the turning angle α of the transport device 1 is at least greater than a given angle, the wheels 3a-3h are turned relative to one another so that the position of the turning axis 9 in the longitudinal direction of the transport device 1 is displaced in proportion to the turning angle α and the transport device 1. Under arduous driving conditions, such as, for example, upon the appearance of a surprise obstacle 10, the turn of the wheels 3a-3h is deflected from the norm by displacement of the turning axis 9 in the longitudinal direction of the transport device 1 towards its front end, whereupon the rear end describes a larger arc motion than normal and thus avoids the obstacle 10. Once the driving conditions are back to normal, the turning axis 9 is returned to its position corresponding to normal travel. The position of the turning axis 9 can be adjusted along a given curve and, where required, altered to follow a different curve according to the driving conditions. <IMAGE>
