Process for the preparation of alkanediols having at least two carbon atoms separating the alcohol groups, which comprises the reaction of a) an alkynediol and/or an alkenediol, of which the alcohol groups are separated by at least two carbon atoms linked by the alkynic or alkenic bond respectively, and b) hydrogen, in the presence of a catalyst composition based upon a compound of cationic palladium, a co-ordinating anion and a bidentate ligand of the general formula R<1>R<2>-M-R-M-R<3>R<4>, wherein M represents phosphorus, arsenic or antimony, R is a bivalent organic bridging group containing from two to four carbon atoms in the bridge and R<1>, R<2>, R<3> and R<4> represent hydrocarbyl groups which may or may not be substituted with polar groups.
|
