PURPOSE: To produce a starchy binder composition for fiber mats comprising a starch, a starch cross-linking agent and an anti-wicking agent and capable of reducing the elongation and wicking by application thereof to the fiber mats. CONSTITUTION: This starchy binder composition for fiber mats is produced by compounding a starch (preferably the one which comprises maltodextrin, etc., and is a mixture of a low-molecular weight starch having <=7,200 Da molecular weight with a high-melting starch having >=7,200 Da molecular weight) with a starch cross-linking agent (preferably the one comprising a urea-formaldehyde resin, etc., and used in an amount of 5-10 wt.% based on the dry weight of the starch) and an anti-wicking agent (preferably the one comprising a wax, etc., and used in an amount of <=4 wt.% based on the dry weight of the starch) and preferably a polymer strength additive. The above polymer strength additive preferably comprises polyvinyl alcohol, etc., and is preferably used in an amount of >=50 wt.% based on the dry weight of the starch. The fiber mats are coated or impregnated with the composition and dried and cross-linked to improve physical properties. |
