<p>PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal element excellent in high-speed response, showing good bistability, and capable of retaining stable orientation over a long period of time by using as liquid crystal a ferroelectric liquid-crystal high- molecular compound having siloxane bounds on its principal chain and a specified mesogen on its side chain. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal element is prepared by putting either a ferroelectric liquid-crystal high-molecular compound having siloxane bonds on its principal chain and a mesogen consisting of a spacer part, a rigid skeleton part, and an optically active part on its side chain [e.g. a compound of formula IV having a group of formula I (wherein n is 6 to 15) as the spacer part, a group of formula II as the rigid skeleton part, and a group of formula III as the optically active part] or a mixture consisting mainly of said compound between a pair of base plates at least one of which is transparent. Unlike the conventional liquid crystal elements, the liquid crystal element thus obtained is excellent in high-speed response, shows good bistability, and can retain stable orientation over a long period of time.</p> |
