A template - controlled copy-milling or engraving- machine comprises controltemplates 14 with straight bases, each template being movable in a direction at right-angles to its base through contact with an abutment 17 slidable along the template on a guide 16 parallel to the base, and electrical, hydraulic or (as shown) mechanical means 28 for transmitting movements of the templates to the tool and/or work. A slide 5, supporting one or more milling-cutters 9 and their electric driving-motor 10, is mounted for template - controlled lateral movement on needle-bearings 44 on a platform 4 moved vertically under the control of another template. The template 14 controls movement of the work-table 3 on needle bearings 44 in a direction perpendicular to the lateral direction of movement of slide 5. For adjustment, movement of table 3 in the same direction as slide 5 is effected by a handle 46, and in the vertical direction by handle 45. A number of workpieces may be machined simultaneously. Each template is carried by a holder 11 fixed to a pivot 13, which is oscillated upon movement of the template by abutment 17. The templates may be curved about the axes of pivots 13. Arms 28 fixed to the pivots convert the oscillations into translations of the tool-slide 5 and work-table 3. Arm 28 for the table engages this through a roller 31 adjustable along the arm by a screw 33 to adjust the extent of movement, a spring (not shown) maintaining engagement between the arm and table. The arm 28 effecting vertical movements of the tool-platform 4, engages an abutment 35, Fig. 9, on a slide 34 in a guide 1a on the machine-bed 1. A track 36, fixed on a pivot 39 in slide 34 and engaged by a follower-roller 37 on the platform, is adjustable as to inclination by a hand-turned worm 41 engaging a worm-wheel 40 on the pivot. A handle 38 locks the track, which is set horizontallywhen it is desired not to move platform 4. This mechanism may also be used if it is desired to move a work-table in a direction parallel with the pivotal axis of its templateholder 11. The template &c. for moving slide 5 horizontally is not shown. The abutments 17 are traversed by rack-and-pinion gearing. In a modification, Fig. 3, all three abutments 171- 173 are mounted on a carriage 18 for movement along a single guide 16, each abutment engaging its respective pivoted template 141-143. The carriage is traversed by a rotating shaft 20 driving a pinion engaging a rack 19 on guide 16. Traverse and rotation of the milling cutter are stopped by switches operated by the carriage.
