PURPOSE: To reduce erroneous alarm rate due to a background signal by calculating the width of statistic distribution of background and target features and then determining threshold parameters based thereon. CONSTITUTION: A stream of digitized pixel values from a signal preprocessor 21 is stored in a sub image pixel memory SIPS. The memory SIPS is divided into a plurality of submemories 23, and a calculated value of a set of features of a background image signal and a target image signal is stored in each submemory 23. A digital computer 20 calculates the statistic distribution of the background and target features of each submemory 23 and sets a threshold for determining a target for each submemory 23. The target is detected by comparing the value of the feature of an incoming image signal with the determined threshold of the submemory 23. |
