PURPOSE:To obtain excellent traveling durability under various environments by using alcohol produced by an oxyo process and allowing the magnetic layer to hold ester compounds produced from fatty acid and said alcohol both of which have a specific range of carbon numbers. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic recording medium is composed of the magnetic layer provided on a nonmagnetic supporting body. The magnetic layer contains or holds thereon at least one kind of ester compound shown in the formula, produced by the reaction of straight or branched chain fatty acid having 12 - 30 carbons and a branched alcohol having 1 - 32 carbons synthesized by the oxyo process. In the formula, R1 represents a straight or branched alkyl group or alkenyl group having 11 - 29 carbons, and R2 represents a branched alkyl group having 10 - 32 carbons. Thereby, the obtained magnetic recording medium has excellent traveling durability under various environments and is suitable for high density recording.
