The invention relates to a control of a testing head for material testing. For this purpose, the testing head is connected to an extension arm which is connected to sensors at both its ends. Each of the sensors is connected to a logic component. When the logic components determine, by mutual comparison, that the sensors are delivering unequal values, the extension arm, which can be rotated about an axis, is adjusted until a balance (equalisation) is produced between the logic components. This is the case when the sensors have the same surface separation, therefore when the extension arm and testing head lie at a tangent to the surface. The sensors used are preferably those of a pneumatic type, since these are not sensitive to small unevennesses of the surface, and even test objects with a low surface quality can thus be covered by these sensors.
