<p>Compositions and methods for the inhibition and prevention of HIV-1 infection are provided. The compositions include polypeptides which are homologous with a region of the human CD4 molecule found at amino acids 37-159, more particularly 37-131, and still more particularly at 37-84, of the natural protein. The polypeptides comprise the effective binding region of CD4 to gp120 of HIV-1, and are useful as a blocking agent in preventing cellular infection. Compositions comprising the polypeptides in a suitable pharmaceutical carrier are also provided.</p> |
