A method for securing connector end-pieces to a sintered rod of one or more carbides, borides or nitrides of Ti, Zr, V, Ta, Nb or Hf comprises wetting a portion of the sintered rod with liquid aluminium, the wetted portion then being placed in contact with a molten metal or alloy having a melting point of at least 950 DEG C., said metal being at least partially miscible with Al in the liquid state (e.g. Ag, Cu, Fe, Ni or their alloys). The Al coating may be applied by immersing the rod as a cathode in a cryolite/alumina electrolytic cell. The Al coated end-pieces may be lowered into a crucible of the molten metal which is allowed to cool to form an ingot, which may be machined to size, on the end of the rod. The rod is used as the cathode in the electrolysis of cryolite/alumina to produce aluminium. |
