In a process and an apparatus for coating an optical fibre with a polymer-based paint, the fibre being drawn at the heated end of a preform, cooled and introduced through an orifice plate in the upper part of a coating pot which is flooded with a gas of low dynamic viscosity, it is provided that the fibre is flushed by a gas of low dynamic viscosity in countercurrent before entry into the coating liquid, in a pipe which is long in relation to the diameter, and that the gas is blown via a nozzle counter to the air stream entrained with the fibre in such a way that the air is stripped away.
