The invention relates to a chair having a seat which can be tilted forwards and upwards about a pivot axis and which terminates with its rear end at the backrest in the sitting position or engages under the backrest and can be moved into a stand-up position by a lifting force acting upon it. In order to be able to pivot the seat relative to the backrest without any movement it is intended that the seat be mounted so as to be displaceable relative to the pivot axis or with the latter from a first position forwards into a second position, and that the seat in the sitting position be pushed into the remote, second position before the pivoting movement of the seat or on commencement thereof and that the seat be compulsorily displaced in the direction of the backrest into the first position after pivoting-back of the seat from the standing-up position into the sitting position.
