PURPOSE:To obtain a polyester tape markedly excellent in strength and modulus in the machine direction and having a uniform thickness, by doubling a plurality of filaments of a liquid crystal-forming aromatic polyester, heat-bonding the filaments together at a specified temperature and subjecting the bonded filaments to solid-state polymerization. CONSTITUTION:A tape comprising a liquid crystal-forming aromatic polyester is produced by heat-bonding a plurality of filaments of said polyester in a doubled state together in an atmosphere at a temperature from the m.p. -50 deg.C to the m.p. +20 deg.C to form a tape, and subjecting this tape to solid-state polymerization. The heat bonding is performed by doubling freshly spun filaments and heat-bonding them or by rewinding separately spun filaments from a bobbin and heat-bonding them. The solid-state polymerization is performed, for example, by heat-treating the bonded filaments in a nitrogen atmosphere. |
