For synchronizing the operations of a processor (PU) with a co-processor (CP) a special branch instruction (BPT) is used which combines a test on the co-processor's busy status with a test on an exceptional situation of the CP and which executes both tests during a time period not longer than the time period required for executing a single test. Moreover, the tests on said conditions require only one instruction bit pattern.
