A starter drive comprises a motor driven shaft 14 having first helical screw-threads 34 connected-thereto, a shiftable drive portion mounted on the driven shaft comprised of a sleeve member 30 having second helical screwthreads 32 slidably engaging the first helical screwthreads, a uni-directional one-way clutch 18 and a drive pinion 12, friction connection means 52, 54 operative when developing a friction force to retard rotation of the shiftable drive portion and cause the shiftable drive portion to advance axially on the driven shaft and latching means 48 operative selectively to engage the friction connection to selectively develop a friction force. The latching means may be actuated and de-actuated substantially concurrently with a starting motor. The latching means may include a solenoid coil and a plunger 72 which is pulled downwardly, dropping a member 74 into teeth on the outer periphery of the plate 46. |
