A commutator motor comprises poles consisting of two or three pole pieces and a one-part or three-part field winding on a stator forming a magnetic return path and operable in either direction or in a direction which can be switched. The field magnet has three pole pieces. The central pole piece (14), whose width is 1/4 of the armature circumference, is connected on either side to another pole piece (15, 16). Together, the pole pieces (15, 16) constitute the total pole width. When the armature rotates in a predetermined direction, the field winding consists of the winding part (18) wound around the central pole piece (14) and the pole piece (15), and the brushes adopt a position such that the central axis (12) from the centre of the pole field (7) to the neutral region (8) of the armature is directed to the pole core centre of the pole field width in such a way that the armature cross-field returns principally through the pole piece (16) which it excites.
