A solar collector which converts solar radiation simultaneously into electrical and thermal energy, thus generating both electricity and heat, comprises a photovoltaic cell (10) and a thermal absorber (12) arranged to receive solar radiation not converted by the photovoltaic cell. Thermal enhancement means, for example heat transfer fluid passed through passages (16,18), increase s the operating temperature difference between the photovoltaic cell and the thermal absorber as compared with a solar collector in which such enhancement is absent or not operative. Preferably the thermal enhancement means functions to cool the photovoltaic cell (10). |
