<p>A position sensor and method for detecting and providing an indication of the position of a movable member (10) comprising a ferromagnetic element (16) oriented substantially parallel to the path of travel of the movable member (10), the element (16) including a segment (18) thereof having spaced-apart ends (20, 22) defining the positional limits between which movement of the movable member is to be monitored, the segment (16) comprising a pair of contiguous, oppositely polarized, remanently magnetized regions (A, B) defining an intersection along the length of the segment; a magnet (14) positioned proximate the intersection and mounted in known spatial relationship to the movable member (10) for movement therewith, and, simultaneously along the ferromagnetic element (16), the magnet (14) providing a magnetic field presenting a constant polarity to the element and having a strength sufficient to locally polarize the element, whereby movement of the magnet means (14) along the element (16) alters the length of the respective regions; and means for sensing the position of the intersection without altering that position and for providing an indication of the position of the movable member based thereon.</p> |
