These mechanical combustion grate bars each include a rectangular plate 1 extended under an edge 2 by an oblique arm 6 which is offset outwards supporting, at the end, a transverse spindle ending in journals 8 allowing them to be fastened and to articulate on endless chains. The rectangular plate 1 becomes horizontal in the upper zone of the mechanical grate in order to form, with others, a flooring capable of supporting a layer of burning coal. The oblique arm 6 forms, at its beginning along the edge 2 of the plate 1, a lower supporting step 12 for the opposite edge 3 of another plate. This step 12 has a rounded internal angle 14 which interacts with the rounded nose 13 formed in the lower part of the opposite edge 3 of the plate 1 so as to leave between the two of them significant adjoining surfaces opposing the passage of combustion air, which then has to pass through the holes 9. <IMAGE>
